About Derek Cheng

Wildcard CMO aims to bring structured, proven strategies that eliminate the bullshit aspects of marketing without sacrificing innovation. These approaches are honed from 30 years of experience in teeny-tiny bootstraps to large-scale enterprises.

Too many companies jump into their marketing without doing the proper work before wasting a lot of effort and resources. Bringing a company to market takes creative energy and deliberation. I want to instill a marketing ethos in your company that’s worthwhile and foundational. And it all starts by focusing on your customer engagements and product-market-fit as the basis for all opportunity and revenue growth.

I also want to help you build a foundational marketing culture, so all future activities are centered and efficient long after I’m gone. That includes an agile, transparent organization teamed with tech-first, customer-centric, and data-loving professionals—but who are also brave enough to take calculated risks.

I’ve been a part of some amazing teams, including helping to grow an entire marketing organization from 2 to 70 as the company scaled. In card games, a wild card can take on the role of any other card to give you the best hand in a situation. In sports, it’s your chance to make the playoffs and win it all, even when you’re not the leader. “Wild Card” was also a 2015 movie featuring Jason Stratham that most people have never seen and fewer remember seeing. This was discovered AFTER we named the company, and we disavow any bearing on our brand. They could have called it “Leaving Las Vegas,” but you know... confusion.
